A birth plan is a document that lets your medical team know your expectations and preferences for labor and delivery, from whether you want pain medication to who's cutting the umbilical cord.

Making a birth plan can help you feel more prepared for childbirth, but it's important to remember that plans aren't set in stone. Flexibility is key, and, ultimately, your medical team is going to do what's safest for you and your baby. Most hospitals and birthing centers have birth plan forms you'll fill out before your due date, but you can also download and use BabyCenter's birth plan template below.
